No news

The home health care people stood me up so Mom tried to dynamite me with no success. Went to the Dr. and had half a liter of fluid. Got home and was violently ill. Luckily the home healthcare lady showed up, who happened to a seasoned ICU er nurse. She had some better tricks than the Dr's office. Phenegren suppository. That killed the nausea and knocked me on my ass for 3 hours. Much needed sleep that I have not had. She assessed me so that they could come and give me iv fluids. SO we haven't solved anything al all really. I am mentally alert. My tummy is still so swollen I am uncomfortable but thank god I am not nauseated, This was a rough week. I haven't eaten since last weekend. Let's hope I can get turned around to get on the plane next week.! Meanwhile home healthcare is coming today and hooking me up to in iv . They informed me that they would not be staying and i should know how to flush the line. I was like what?

  1. Thank God for that nurse and her bag of tricks. I hope you can get more sleep today - it's the perfect weather for sleeping - and maybe a taste of ginger ale for your tummy? I know you'll be feeling better and turned around soon and that plane ride will be easy as pie. Do you have anything good to read? Something deep and engaging like Ken Follett's "Fall of
Giants" or "Pillars of the Earth?" I love you and am praying, praying, praying ..

  2. Ellen, have you talked to a social worker at your local hospital? This sounds like it has gone beyond what your situation should be. Somebody should be doing something to make you at least more comfortable. I hate to say the dreaded "E" word, but has anyone mentioned an enema? I am so sorry you are in such discomfort/pain.

  3. I was amazed at what the home health care people thought I should be able to do for Vivian after we got her home. I acted pretty helpless so they changed it to more care until someone could at least model for me a few times what to do. One of the things they expected me to do was to access Vivian's port every 12 hours to administer her IV antibiotic. I knew that one time in the hospital the ICU nurse had done this and the tube leading into the port had come dislodged under the skin. When I asked what I would do or how I would even know if that happened, they got the orders changed so that a nurse had to come and administer that medicine.

I think that often the squeakiest wheel gets the grease in these situations so stand up for yourself or sic Jane on them. Or if you are feeling too weak, ask one of your good friends to be there and advocate for you.

I sure hope your pain and discomfort improve soon. Thinking of you and checking in here often.

  5. This all just doesn't seem right - seems like someone in the medical profession should be able to make you go to the bathroom ...
